The Black Consciousness Conference
The Black Consciousness Conference has been a tradition on the California State University, Long Beach campus for the last thirty-three years. Our conference is the longest standing student conference in California. Solely coordinated by CSULB students, it has been an immense success over the years. Our conference has a strong tradition of being intellectually stimulating for its participants. It has been a positive experience for every individual involved. It seeks to enhance awareness within the community about topics that impact the community. With a legacy of reaching a wide variety of students and community members from all over the United States, the Black Consciousness Conference has proven to be an exceptional contribution to the community.
In 1979, the CSULB Black Student Union saw that it was necessary, critical, and a need for a national conference for Black students and the Black community at-large. They wanted to create a comfortable environment for Black people to discuss the plight of OUR people, social critical issues that affect OUR people, and to remind OUR people about the historical greatness in which they come from.
The Black Consciousness Conference has featured world renowned scholars and educators from all over the country, such as educational psychologist Dr. Julia Hare, scholar, educator, and author of over 65 books Dr. Molefi Asante, former chair of the Black Panther Party Elaine Brown, 1968 Olympian John Carlos, and many more!
Every year, dedicated, passionate, and hard-working students spend their summer break organizing this intellectually stimulating and fun-filled weekend long conference. They strive to make this a memorable experience for everyone involved. This year's conference is better than ever so please join us as we continue the BLACK CONSCIOUSNESS MOVEMENT!
